Despite the common perception, the modern look
does not mean contemporary stye. It is a style that emerged at the turn of the
20th century and received a large following for some time. The style has
changed and adapted with time and has given its own offshoots like neo-modern
or post modern.
Get the right fabric: The modern
look emphasises the natural, earthy look. So avoid any faux elements. This is
the look that is best shown with organic material like cotton or linen. Go for
earthy tones like whites, tan, cream and other neutral shade. The only
exception is the modern noir look, which uses the colour black’s powerful shade
for a specific mood. However, make sure that it is organic and completely
natural.
Print it right: Since the modern
look rejects fuss, your modern
window curtains must also follow this lead. Avoid fussy or large prints.
Most modern curtains have a single shade. A light shade like white or tan is
very adaptable and will go with the calm atmosphere that is hallmark of this
style. You can add clean geometric patterns like stripes or checks. However,
make sure that these are discreet and clean.
No fuss: Many stylists believe
that the modern look does not really need curtains. It is a design style that
looks for clean lines and is hence, rejects any clutter. However, that may be
too extreme for most of us who need some sort of window treatment. Even though
you may need it, make sure your window treatment is very unfussy. So, avoid
using elaborate valences or frilly swags.
This also applies to the stitch of your curtain.
Do not go for fussy stitching like French pleats. Pinch pleats may look nice,
but this style does equally well with simple eyelet pleats or tab tops.
Hardware: Finally, pay attention
to the hardware. Use powder-coated curtain rods for a nice finished look and
chuck the pelmet. You can use window gadgets for opening and closing your
curtains. Certain pleating styles avoid even the use of rings, such as eyelet
curtains.
